When approached to create this logo for Skybound, there were already some ideas on the table. My job was to execute each idea as far as it could be taken to see if they could work. One of the initial ideas was to render a fingerprint in place of the “O.” After a couple of attempts to integrate the fingerprint, we tried another idea from the Editorial staff to have a DNA helix rather than a fingerprint. After some initial experiments, some with the “O” replaced with the helix, we tried something different. Instead of using a font and doing an enhanced type treatment, I created random shapes in Illustrator and began forming letters from the parts of the shapes. Ultimately, after some refinement, the idea of the DNA helix as an ornament came in to focus. For the proof, I used all neutral colors, in my mind evoking the idea of a clone as a blank neutral slate. The details of the story were confidential at the time of this logo’s creation, so I hope I nailed it! The entire logo is vector art, so the color schemes are easily editable, even the strands of the DNA.
